i can tell you firsthand that having playoffs at the end of the
season did not decrease the value of our regular season. trying to
win your conference to win the automatic bid made every game
important. trying to be ranked highly enough so that if you did not
win your conference, your ranking would warrant an at large bid made
every game important.
this theory that a playoff would devalue the regular season is
rediculous. they only way it will devalue it is if you do not do it
the right way. if it is done right, it will only make your
conference games (which i feel catch the most attention in the
regular season anyways) that much more important.
