I don’t recall the ‘blaming the flu’ game. I thought maybe you were
referring to Plati explaing why Georgia Tech beat NU so much worse
than CU did in 1990. But, Plati blamed it on NU suspensions rather
than the flu.
Per Plati:
“Tech played, what was by the time they saw them, a beat up Nebraska
in a bowl game at a neutral site (Orlando, which is 996 miles closer
to Atlanta than Lincoln); CU won convincingly in the rain and cold
in Nebraska. And a former student assistant of mine from that year,
Nick Rowan, reminded me of this little tidbit: NU coach Tom Osborne
suspended several key players for the bowl game, so personnel-wise,
it wasn't even the same Husker team.”
The 25 years ago must be the 1982 Penn State game. Right or wrong,
that call turned out to be critical to Penn State winning the MNC,
and very well may have cost NU the MNC. CU fans were blaming
Blekeman for their loss to freggin Iowa State.
